Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), the world’s largest maker of electric-vehicle batteries, is pushing deeper into the battery-swapping game with a new agreement that could increase adoption of the technology, seen a solution of one of the major obstacles limiting the uptake of EVs.

The deal, which was signed Wednesday between a CATL subsidiary and Fujian Provincial Expressway Co. Ltd., will lead to the formation of a joint venture that will be tasked with building and operating a network of battery-swapping stations along the expressways in the eastern Chinese province of Fujian.
