Southend United Record Transfers
Needless to say, Southend United are truly not the first team you think of when talking about squads with deep pockets. And what better proof of that than the fact that they are yet to break their transfer record 20 years after it was first set? It’s also quite interesting that the only big-money arrival that’s currently on their books in the last ten years is Michael Timlin and he was bought in 2011/12 for £203,000 from Swindon Town – the rest all happened prior to 2010 and, as is the case with the vast majority of them, in the 90s.
In first place, however, we have Mike Marsh who was transferred from Galatasaray in 1995/96 for a club-record fee of £540,000 and he then set the bar so high it wouldn’t be eclipsed in the next 25 years and running.
Still, it has to be said that they did come fairly close to doing it a couple of years after when they purchased Simon Coleman from Bolton Wanderers for £401,000. Gary Poole is the third man on the list for his then-record breaking fee of £360,000 back in 1993/94 when he switched to Southend from Plymouth Argyle.
Their departures, however, are expectedly both much more lucrative and somewhat more recent too. However, when it comes to club records in that department, the business from the ‘90s still dominates the scene. Stan Collymore departed for Nottingham Forest for £2.7m in 1993/94 and remains their most expensive sale in the history of the club.
He is then closely followed by Freddie Eastwood for his £2m move back in 2007/08 and Nicky Bailey, who was transferred to Charlton Athletic for £873,000 a year after that, sits in third place.
Famous Southend United Transfers
Despite the lack of any gigantic deals both in their outgoing and incoming business, there were still some pretty big names donning their colours over the years. The exit of Collymore in 93/94 was certainly a big thing for the club and they wouldn’t make so much profit from a single sale in the next 25 years.
Marsh’s purchase in 95/96 that set the record yet to be eclipsed deserves to be mentioned for a largely similar thing. And it’s quite likely he stays on the top of the mountain in the near future too. But the arrivals of icons like Steve Wilson and Eastwood were quite memorable as well and the latter’s exit in 07/08 is still their second-biggest sale to this day.
