Tranmere Rovers Record Transfers
As is the case with many teams in League One’s roster, some of the biggest deals to go through at Tranmere Rovers have been done all the way back in the ‘90s. Part of the reason why that is so, of course, is that the market wasn’t such a crazy place then as it is today and the fees were much lower in general.
But even with all of that taken into consideration, the biggest arrival in the history is that of Shaun Teale from Aston Villa for £495,000 back in 1995/96. Of course, we can immediately tell that while that is not a surreal fee in today’s standards, they still couldn’t get anywhere near it, let alone surpass it, even more than 20 years into the future.
But what’s even more interesting is that only a season after that transfer went through, they also purchased Paul Cook from Coventry City for £450,000 and that remains the closest they would get to actually eclipsing their own record. In third place we have Pat Nevin who was brought in from Everton in 1992/93 for a reported fee of £405,000.
When it comes to departures, the situation is somewhat more impressive, not to mention far more lucrative. Steve Simonsen’s exit to Everton in 1998/99 for £4.4m remains their top sale to this day and the biggest piece of business the club has ever conducted.
He is then closely followed by Jason Koumas and his £3.1m sum that enabled his move to West Bromwich Albion in 2002/03 and Alan Rogers’ departure for Nottingham Forest for £2.7m in 1997/98.
Famous Tranmere Rovers Transfers
Tranmere Rovers have had more than just a couple of big-name players on their books over the years. Nevin is surely one of them and his arrival back in 1992/93 was a start of an incredible stint that would bring success for both the player and the club as well. Not to mention that Rovers set a new club record when they finally got him from the Toffees.
We also have to give a shout to Simonsen for the incredible fee Everton paid to lure him away. Then there is Rovers’ goal-machine, Steve Yates, who joined them in 1999. But maybe the most famous signing ever for the club was the one of Ian Muir.
The striker arrived as a free agent from Brighton & Hove Albion and ended up becoming an incredible piece of business and a bargain if we’ve ever seen one, scoring goals galore and making the fans fall in love with him along the way. The decision to get him back to the club back in the day definitely turned out to be a famous move by Rovers.
