Nottingham Forest History
Nottingham Forest Football Club was born in 1865 after shinny (a similar sport to hockey) players met at the Clinton Arms pub on Shakespeare Street. As the Football League was formed in 1888, Forest’s application was rejected, and instead, they competed in the Football Alliance, winning the competition in 1892 which eventually secured their spot in Division One of the Football League.
The 1897-88 season was iconic for the Reds, as they won their first-ever major trophy, the FA Cup – 62,000 fans saw Forest triumph against Derby County as they won 3-1. In 1898, Forest moved to The City Ground after a concerted fundraising effort secured the required £3,000, and they still play their home matches there today in front of over 30,000.

Forest made their fourth re-appearance in the top flight at the end of the 1956-57, after an 18-year absence. In just their second season back in the First Division, Forest claimed their first piece of silverware in the 20th century which was their second FA Cup trophy. Forest overcame Luton Town 2-1 in the final, despite playing most of the game with ten men.
Moving on to Nottingham Forest’s golden years, during 1975-1993, the Reds were seen as one of, if not the best team in Europe during the Brian Clough era. In 1976, Forest won promotion back into Division One, and they also clinched their first trophy since 1959 – the Anglo-Scottish Cup.
This was just the start of great dominance of English and European football. Forest won the First Division the following season by seven points, along with the League Cup. They began the 1978-79 season with major trophies in their sights – the Division One championship, European Cup, FA Cup and League Cup. Their expectations were almost met, Forest went on to finish runners-up in the league, though were successful in claiming their second back-to-back League Cup, as well as the prestigious European Cup and Charity Shield to add to their sought after collection.
The following season of 1979-80, Forest put their name to another European Cup and the Super Cup whilst finishing runners-up in the League Cup. The Reds went on to win another back-to-back pair of League Cups in 1989 and 1990, though were relegated in the inaugural Premier League season. From here the Reds battled between the First and Second Divisions, and they even had a blip in League One from 2005-08.
