Brentford FC history

After a famous meeting at the Oxford & Cambridge pub by members of the local rowing club, Brentford was established in 1889. Ten years later, the FA forced the amateur team to go professional after it transpired the B’s were paying players to play, which was illegal at the time.

Having spent a few years as a wandering side, the London club finally settled down at Griffin Park in 1904, where the Bees have played all their home games ever since.

Supporters group Bees United and Oxford University alumni Matthew Benham entered into a partnership in 2009, with the economics analyst keeping the option to buy the club in the future. The Trust indicated the motion should be brought forward in 2012 and Benham purchased the remaining stakes from the board.

As a result, Brentford are currently experiencing a period of stability for the first time in a long while.

How many trophies have Brentford FC won?

The Bees enjoyed their most successful period in the mid-1930s, winning the Third Division and Second Division in rapid succession. Brentford have also been Football League Trophy finalists three times so far.

More recently, the club reached the Championship playoff finals in 2013, losing in the semi-finals to Middlesbrough on aggregate.

Following the end of World War 2, Brentford dropped down several flights into the Fourth Division, and chairman Jack Dunnett splashed the cash to revamp the squad, and the Bees finished the season as champions in May 1963.

However, the short-term spending had severe consequences in the long run. A meeting between Dunnett and Jim Gregory, the chairman of bitter rivals Queens Park Rangers, to orchestrate a takeover of Griffin Park by Rangers was leaked to the press, and this shocking news angered supporters and worsened the relationship between the two clubs.

A consortium of local businessmen and fans bought Dunnett’s shares and this quick thinking stopped the Londoners from going bust.

Assistant first team coach Kevin O’Connor earned himself a place in the club’s official Hall of Fame after playing over 500 games for the Bees. The Irishman is fourth on the list of all-time appearances and made more than 200 appearances as captain. Attacking talents like Chris Kamara, Jim Towers and Marcus Gayle have all worn the famous Red and White Stripes.
