Brighton: Young midfielder joins Championship club on loan
Brighton youngster Jayson Molumby has left the club to join Championship side Millwall on a season-long loan deal, the club has confirmed on their official website.
The centre-midfielder captained the Republic of Ireland’s U21 side at the Toulon Tournament this year and even won a trophy for being in the top four players at the competition.
Brighton also announced that the 19-year-old has penned a new two-year contract at the club, keeping him at the Amex until 2021.
The youngster has been playing mainly for Brighton’s U23s and U18s, but has made a couple of senior appearances for the club, including a debut in the EFL Cup versus Barnet in August 2017 and subsequently played the next round versus Bournemouth.
He will now join up with Neil Harris’ Millwall in his first loan deal away from the club.
Millwall should provide a good challenge for Jayson Molumby, who is having to bounce back from a difficult season with a long-term knee injury.
Brighton could benefit from this deal, with Molumby likely to get an opportunity at Championship level, which should really aid his development and get him used to play men’s football.
He is yet to prove himself at men’s level, but has good experience in the Premier League 2, having played 40 games, scoring once and assisting once.
Molumby told the press about how he looking forward to expressing his passion with the fans.
Molumby said to The Argus: “To be honest, when I first heard Millwall were interested, I thought about how much of a big club it was to come into.
“When I spoke to the gaffer, I felt it was important to come here. He was great with me. I’m buzzing to play in front of the fans.
“All around the world, people know how passionate the Millwall fans are and I think that’s the same being Irish – we have that passion too. I’ll work hard and hopefully show them what I can do.”
This is a good move for Brighton, who will have one of their youngsters have a chance to experience a good standard of football.
He will learn a lot at Millwall, who will be playing a very different style of football to what Potter is used to, if the signings of target men Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Matt Smith are anything to go by. Smith has already talked about what a threat they will be from set-pieces and crosses, implying they will play a very direct style of football this year.
That is expected to be different at Brighton, who will likely turn to a more ‘progressive’ style of football, which will include a lot more short passes and a possession comparatively to Hughton. Last season, Swansea – despite finishing midtable with limited resources – achieved more passes than any other team in the league.
This could teach Molumby valuable adaptation skills and will benefit his career to experience a different club in a very competitive environment.
