Fulham FC history

Fulham pride themselves on being the oldest football club in the whole of London. According to the archives, a school teacher and churchwarden joined forces to form a team for Fulham St Andrew’s Church all the way back in 1879. After a period of expansion, the club rebranded to the name we are all familiar with to-date.

In 1896, the Whites finally moved into their new home, known as Craven Cottage, where they have remained up until now.

Recognised as professionals in 1898, Fulham climbed the ranks to reach the Football League by 1907, having won the Second League twice.

Although at first the club struggled to find its feet, the Lily Whites spent a combined total of 26 seasons in the top flight, mostly during the 1960s and early 2000s.

Fulham went into a decline during the late 1980s as mounting financial problems grew and grew. Mohamed Al-Fayed kickstarted a revival and splashed the cash in 1997. The Cottagers returned to the English top tier for the first time in over 30 years.

Shahid Khan, who also owns NFL team Jacksonville Jaguars, bought the club in July 2013, and, following a series of changes in quick succession at the top, replaced Claudio Ranieri with caretaker manager Scott Parker in a bid to save the side from relegation.

While the former England international couldn’t stop the drop to the Championship, he was handed a permanent contract in 2019.

How many trophies have Fulham FC won?

Despite the fact they have never won a major trophy, Fulham have reached the finals of the FA Cup and the Europa League in 1975 and 2010 respectively.

Interestingly, a couple of former Cottagers, Zesh Rehman and Kevin Betsy, are the only two players to have represented Pakistan and Seychelles in the Premier League.

Sean Davis remains the only player to have worn the White jersey in all four of the top divisions in English football.

Famous Fulham FC players

Johnny Haynes is undoubtedly the most famous and influential player in the club’s history. Although the likes of Bobby Moore, Bobby Robson, and George Best have all laced their boots at Craven Cottage, Haynes is widely recognised by many fans as Fulham’s greatest player of all time.

The ex-England international stayed in London for over 20 years, making his debut as a youngster all the way back in 1952, and earning 56 caps for his country.
