Cardiff City FC history

Formerly known as Riverside AFC, the club was founded by Walter Bartley Wilson as a way to keep the Riverside Cricket Club active during the winter. After a short spell at the Sophia Gardens ground, Cardiff gathered the funds to build their own stadium, Ninian Park, and the team turned professional in 1910.

The Blues gained entry to the Football League in 1920 and were initially placed in the Second Division. Post-war, Cardiff bounced back-and-forth between the top divisions, joining the European Cup Winners Cup for the first time in 1964.

After a takeover from Malaysian business mogul Vincent Tan, the Bluebirds underwent an extensive makeover, and the squad’s kit was changed to red and black. However, following objection from a large section of the fan base, Tan agreed to revert the team strip back to the traditional blue home jersey.

How many trophies have Cardiff City won?

Remarkably, Cardiff City remain the only non-English club to have won the FA Cup in 1927, famously beating Arsenal 1-0 in the final. Most recently, the Bluebirds lifted the Championship title in 2013. Cardiff have also picked up the Welsh Cup 22 times, just behind Wrexham in second place overall.

Despite the uproar from supporters, the Welsh side had not always been blue. Originally, the team walked out onto the pitch wearing orange and brown shirts, complete with orange socks, which is quite a hideous combination. It is hardly surprising the board subsequently switched the colours to the iconic blue we all recognise today.

As crowds grew and grew, it became apparent that Ninian Park couldn’t cope with modern-day demands, and the building of Cardiff City Stadium was completed in May 2009.

Cardiff are part of the infamous South Wales derby along with bitter rivals Swansea City. The Blues also have notable rivalries with Bristol City and Newport County.

Famous Cardiff City players

Legendary forward Len Davies is the club’s all-time record goalscorer. Cardiff can also be credited with discovering former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who used the Cardiff City Stadium to catapult his career to new heights, and is now plying his trade at Italian giants Juventus. Ex-Welsh international John Toshack also started at his hometown club, going on to score 100 goals in over 200 appearances.
