Birmingham City History

Birmingham City was founded over 140 years ago in 1875, and the club has been based at its present home of St. Andrew’s Stadium in the Small Heath district of Birmingham since 1906. The Blues are currently ranked as the 28th most successful in the history of English football, based on major trophies won, and in terms of seasons played in the top division of English football, Birmingham City rank 21st with 57 years of participation in the top-flight.

The Blues famously defeated their bitter city rivals Aston Villa back in 1963, to claim their first League Cup, and their most recent cup success came in 2011, when Alex McLeish led the Clues to triumph against Arsenal against all the odds at Wembley Stadium, in front of a sell-out crowd. The Blues also won a few lower league domestic trophies – the Leyland Daf Cup in 1991 and 1995. They also managed to reach the final of the prestigious FA Cup on two occasions – 1931 and 1956, losing to West Bromwich Albion and Manchester City respectively.

Moving on to league competitions, the Blues have spent the majority of their time competing in the top two divisions, and in 1986, Birmingham faced relegation from the top-tier and had to wait 16-years to return. During this time in the 1992-93 season, City went into receivership and they were saved by the arrival of businessmen David Sullivan and David and Ralph Gold. The new owner pumped millions of pounds into the historic club, and re-developed St. Andrew’s into a 30,000 all-seater stadium.

Former Birmingham City and Manchester United legend Steve Bruce returned to take charge of the Blues at the end of 2001, and under Bruce, Birmingham managed to achieve Premier League status within just six-months. The Blues overcame Norwich in the play-off final, in front of over 70,000 supporters at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. The top-flight proved too tough for Steve Bruce and after just four seasons, the Blues were relegated back down to the Championship.

This did not last long, however, as Birmingham bounced straight back up to the Premier League after finishing second in 2006-07 Championship, though once again their stay did not last long as they faced relegation once more at the end of the following season. Alex McLeish took charge of Birmingham at the end of 2007, and with his help, the Blues managed to win promotion back up to Premier League after finishing second, and this time their stay in the top-flight would last two seasons with 9th, being the clubs highest finish in 2009-10.

Since relegation to the Championship in 2010-11, the Blues have struggled to regain their Premier League status.
