Burnley History

One of the oldest clubs in England and founding members of the Football League, Burnley was created by members of the local rugby team, and the club initially only played in friendlies until they entered the FA Cup in 1885. Starting out at Calder Vale, the Clarets quickly moved to Turf Moor after being invited by the cricket club, and this has been their home stadium ever since.

During the 1920/1921 season, BFC went on an incredible unbeaten run of 30 games in total, smashing the previous record, and this stood for over 80 years, before being beaten by Arsenal’s Invincibles towards the beginning of the century.

Shockingly, John Benson’s Burnley dropped to the Fourth Division for the first time in their history in 1985, which was the fifth relegation in just fifteen seasons.

After the collapse of ITV Digital, the club narrowly avoided administration, but bounced back to qualify for Premier League promotion, beating Sheffield United in the Championship playoff final in 2009.

How many trophies have Burnley won?

The Lancashire side remain one of only five teams to have won all four of the top divisions, Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Blades, Portsmouth and Preston North End being the other four.

Burnley have won most of the major honours in English football, apart from the League Cup, which has still eluded them to this day. The Clarets won the Second Division to claim their first prize in the trophy cabinet all the way back in 1898.

Guided by legendary manager Harry Potts, the small market town won the First Division again in 1960, and reached the European Cup quarter-finals a year later.

Burnley Facts

Originally, the board tried out various colours for the team strip, including numerous combinations of claret, amber, black, red and white, before finally settling for the famous claret and sky blue we all recognise today. The classic kit paid recognition to Aston Villa, who were champions at the time.

Famously, the Northern side became the first club to bear the right to wear the Royal Arms, thanks to a visit from Prince Albert Victor to the home ground.

Traditionally, Burnley’s biggest rivals are their North West counterparts, Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers.

Turf Moor has hosted a number of former England internationals over the years, including the likes of Tommy Lawton, Jimmy McIlroy, Mike Summerbee, Ian Wright and Paul Gascoigne.

Fan favourite Wade Elliot was awarded the Player of the Year award twice in back-to-back seasons. He notably scored the pivotal matchwinner against the Blades to secure promotion to the English top flight.
