Coventry City: Callum Wilson funds set to boost Mark Robins’ transfer kitty
Coventry City are set to receive a cash windfall from Callum Wilson’s move to Newcastle United from Bournemouth.
With the Cherries suffering relegation to the Championship from the Premier League last season, Wilson’s exit from the Vitality Stadium comes as no great surprise.
The 28-year-old, who scored eight goals in 35 Premier League games last term, has completed his move to Steve Bruce’s Newcastle in a deal reportedly worth £20m.
Having joined Bournemouth in 2014, the England international previously played for Coventry, starting his career with the Sky Blues. Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, the 28-year-old is now a Newcastle player and will enjoy another season of top-flight football, completing a move believed to be worth £20m (as per Sky Sports).
That move will benefit Coventry, who installed a 10% sell-on clause on Wilson’s sale to Bournemouth six years ago, meaning they could recoup a sum of £2m if the striker moves on for said asking price.
That windfall could hand Mark Robins some extra funds as he bolsters his squad ahead of the new Championship season.
The decision to insert that sell-on clause for Wilson was a wise one from Coventry, who can use that £2m to either pay for wages or bring in a new player.
In a football climate affected heavily by the global pandemic, any such windfalls are sure to be welcomed by clubs in the Championship, particularly with the Sky Blues having just been promoted to the division.
