Aston Villa: Tottenham Hotspur backed to sign Ollie Watkins
Tottenham Hotspur have been backed to sign Ollie Watkins from Brentford by talkSPORT pundit Perry Groves, amid interest from Aston Villa in the Championship striker.
Villa boss Dean Smith is in the market for a new striker after seeing the likes of Mbwana Samatta, Keinan Davis and Wesley struggle last season.
Netting 26 goals in the Championship for Brentford last term, Watkins has emerged as a potential option to bolster Villa’s strike force.
The Bees forward was arguably one of the most in-form strikers in English football last season, averaging 2.7 shots and won 2.3 headers per game.
With Villa showing interest, it has now emerged that Spurs are also looking to bring him with journalist Alan Nixon tweeting (via @reluctantnicko) that Jose Mourinho is keen on the 24-year-old.
That tweet has been backed up by a report from Birmingham LIVE who claim a £25m bid could be made by the North London side.
Reacting to the report linking Spurs with a move for Watkins, Villa fans gave their opinion. One claimed it would be ‘shambolic’ if the club missed out on the striker, whilst another argued that he wouldn’t get as much game time if he moved to Tottenham…
Just what are our recruitment team doing to let this happen. Shambolic comes to mind.

Wouldn’t get the game time at Spurs I don’t think

The market is inflated.
Pay the 26 or 28 and recoup the 6-10 mill another time.
Watkins is going to score 10-15 goals next year.
We need someone like this…do it.— william gessler (@WilliamGessler) September 7, 2020
Even as a bench warmer?
