Huddersfield Town History

Huddersfield Town was formed in 1908, at the Albert Pub, Huddersfield and the Huddersfield Association Football Ground Co. was also formed with the purchase of Leeds Road recreation fields which was the clubs first stadium. Later that year, Huddersfield Town Association Football Club was registered as a limited company with Fred Walker appointed as the club’s first manager.

In 1910, just three years after being founded, Town joined the Football League for the first time, and in 1920 they would reach the 1920 FA Cup Final and win promotion to Division One after finishing second.

Infamously, Huddersfield became the first English team to win three successive English League titles in 1926 – a feat that only three other clubs (Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United) have matched. This iconic domination was led by legend Herbert Chapman, and his successor Cecil Potter. Huddersfield also managed to win the FA Cup in 1992 and the Charity Shield in the same year.

The 1921-22 FA Cup final was won against Preston North End, as Huddersfield triumphed 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in front of over 50,000 spectators. Before the start of the 1969-70 season, Huddersfield Town adopted the nickname “The Terriers”, and they won the Second Division title that season, spending the next two season in the top flight of English football before facing many ups and downs between the lower three divisions for 45 years.

Moving on to recent years, in 2010-11, Huddersfield went 43 games unbeaten in League One which at the time was the second-highest record after Arsenal’s 49 invincible unbeaten run in 2003-04.

This was not enough to claim promotion however, and following a penalty shoot-out in the 2011-12 League One play-off final against Sheffield United, the Terriers were promoted up to the Championship. Late 2015, German manager David Wagner took charge of the Terriers as he became the first-ever foreign-born coach to take charge of the club in their history. Just two seasons into his reign, Wagner won the club promotion to the Premier League for the first time (since reformation), beating Reading 4- 3 on penalties in the play-off final at Wembley.

The challenge was proven to be too tough for Wagner and his Huddersfield side, and they were subsequently relegated after just two seasons in the top flight at the end of the 2018-19 season. Stay up to date with breaking Huddersfield Town news from the Championship here!
