Sunderland fans on Twitter had little hope for anything last night
As evenings go, Sunderland supporters had a woeful one yesterday. The Black Cats’ outside hopes of going back up the Championship automatically have been dashed by a poor run of form, and last night’s loss to Fleetwood confirmed it would be the playoffs for them. The result and the consequences of it were hard to take and the Mackems were distraught.

Jack Ross has done a very good job at the Stadium of Light, but in truth, the fans have probably expected too much in their first season in League One. With Sunderland and Portsmouth both losing, Luton Town and Barnsley fans have been given the incredible high of winning automatic promotion. That leaves Sunderland facing a tough challenge with one more league game and then the playoffs.
The Northeast club have won just one of their last six games and that kind of form is not the sort that playoff winners have. As things stand, Sunderland are set to be facing Charlton in the playoff semi-finals and will have the advantage if playing at home in the second leg, and that should be something they’ll be happy about, but at the moment the disappointment of yesterday is too overwhelming to think about much else.

If we can’t beat Fleetwood, god help us in the play offs.

Poor again. No chance in the play offs.

Same old same old, go 1-0 up then drop back and play negative defensive play with a crap defence. Tactics and players not good enough.

No doubt you @OscarJCMedia will be asking Ross questions. No doubt you'll let him off scot free and not ask any tough questions like our inability to defend leads and above all score more than 1 goal.

Don't worry. Charlie Methven said our expectations are too high. The players have listened and delivered. #WeAreOnOurWay to underachieving. Give them all a pat on the back.

The Mackems were so excited for a promotion push this season, and the fact they’ve fallen into the playoffs is something that’s left a lump in the throats of the fans.
