Tottenham Hotspur: Surprising EFL club emerges as potential destination for Danny Rose - Middlesbrough Transfer Rumours

Tottenham Hotspur outcast Danny Rose could be set for a surprise switch to Championship side Middlesbrough, who are plotting a move for the defender.

Rose has been made surplus to requirements by Jose Mourinho having spent the second half of last season out on loan at Newcastle United. The arrival of Sergio Reguilón in the summer from Real Madrid has pushed the 30-year-old even further down the pecking order.

Spurs could opt for loan move after failing to secure fee for Rose

Tottenham had been looking to receive around £5 million for Rose to allow him to leave the club on a permanent deal this summer. However, a move to Serie A side Genoa fell through despite talks between the two clubs, as per Football Insider. While Newcastle opted not to make a permanent move for the left-back.

That leaves Rose with only really the option of dropping down to the Championship in a loan move to get regular game time. Middlesbrough are now believed to be planning to make a move for the England international ahead of the domestic transfer window deadline, as per Football Insider.

Where did Mauricio Pochettino complete his playing career?

It had been suggested that Tottenham could be prepared to mutually terminate Rose’s contract, which still has one more year remaining and is worth £60,000-a-week (via Spotrac). However, that would only happen if the club failed to find a potential loan destination for him, as per Football London.

Dropping down to Championship would sum up Danny Rose’s decline

Rose was once one of Tottenham’s most influential performers and was described by Mauricio Pochettino as a ‘great player’ during the 2018/19 campaign. However, since Mourinho came into the club, it has been clear that he has not fancied the Englishman.

The 30-year-old made just 23 Premier League appearances combined for both Newcastle and Tottenham last term, averaging 0.8 interceptions and 1.7 tackles per game (via Sofascore). That is a sizeable drop off from the 1.2 interceptions and 2.8 tackles per game he made in 2016/17, as per Sofascore. A move to Middlesbrough could signal how far his game, and perhaps his reputation, has declined.
