Middlesbrough History
Middlesbrough Football Club was formed in 1876 by members of Middlesbrough Cricket Club at a meeting at the Albert Park Hotel. Over ten years later in 1889, Boro turned professional, though just three years after they reverted to amateur status and won the Northern League. In 1899, Middlesbrough were elected to join the Football League’s Division Two for the first time, and in 1902 they were promoted to Division One after conceding only 24 goals throughout the season which is a club record.
In 1958, Brian Clough scored five goals in an opening day 9-0 win over Brighton, a club record. 20 years later, former England international Jack Charlton led Boro to the Second Division title in just his first season, with a record number of points – 65. In 1976, Boro won the Anglo-Scottish Cup and reached the semi-final of the League Cup, losing 4-1 to Manchester City over two legs – get more Middlesbrough news and history here!
1992 was an iconic year for the Boro, as they won automatic promotion up to the inaugural Premier League thanks to new manager Lennie Lawrence. Boro also enjoyed a League Cup run during their first season in the top flight, reaching the semi-finals; however, narrowly lost 2-1 on aggregate to Manchester City. Despite this massive achievement, Boro were relegated in just their first season in the Premier League.
Another memorable moment for Boro was their move to the brand new 30,000 all-seater Riverside Stadium in 1995. At the time, this was the largest football stadium built in the UK for 70 years, and after winning the Division One championship the following season, the club signed England international Nick Barmby for £5.25m along with Brazilian Footballer of the Year, Juninho.
The following year, Boro smashed their club transfer record, by signing Juventus and Italian international striker, Fabrizio Ravanelli for £7m, just two months after he had scored in the European Cup Final.
1997 was full of many ups and downs for Middlesbrough. They appeared in their first two major cup finals, but lost the League Cup final to Leicester City, and then lost the second FA Cup final to Chelsea at Wembley. Along with this, Middlesbrough were relegated from the Premier League on the final day of the season, despite Juninho finishing second in the Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards.
Juninho was sold to Atletico Madrid for £12m, and Boro brought in England international Paul Merson from Arsenal for £5m. The following season they were promoted straight back up to the Premier League after finishing second.
Middlesbrough competed in the Premier League until the end of 2008-09, and had one more short season-long spell in the top flight in 2016-17 before facing relegation back down to the Championship where they are today – keep up to date with breaking Middlesbrough news from the Championship here!
