Norwich City history

Two schoolmasters, Robert Webster and Joseph Cowper-Nutchey, arranged a meeting and formed the Yellow and Greens all the way back in the summer of 1902.

Originally an amateur side, the Norfolk club turned semi-professional in the Southern League, before finally being admitted to the English Football League at the end of the First World War.

City have spent a large amount of time being promptly promoted and relegated between the country’s top divisions, alongside surviving multiple financial crises, and expulsion from the Football Association.

Norwich moved into the iconic Nest in 1908, although following years of rising attendance levels, the board took the decision to relocate to Carrow Road. King George VI made a surprise visit to the stadium in 1938, which marked the first time a monarch had attended a game in the second tier.

How many trophies have Norwich City won?

Understandably, the Canaries’ most prized possessions in their trophy cabinet are the two League Cup wins in 1962 and 1985. Led by club captain Ron Ashman, City defeated Rochdale United 4-0 over both legs to lift their first major trophy. They also shocked fans and pundits alike during their storming run to the 1959 FA Cup semi-final, memorably beating Manchester United 3-0, despite still being in the Third Division.

‘On the Ball, City,’ the official club song, is widely known as the oldest football chant in the world. In fact, Norwich were originally nicknamed the Citizens, and turned out in light blue and white shirts. The club have since been branded as the Canaries, in reference to the local community’s long-standing tradition of breeding the small birds, and started in their iconic livery for the first time in 1907.

The Canaries have an ongoing rivalry with Ipswich Town and fixtures are referred to as the Old Farm derby.

Crowds in attendance at Carrow Road have been dazzled by displays from the likes of Chris Sutton, Dean Ashton, Iwan Roberts, Craig Bellamy, and Grant Holt.

Of course, we must give a special mention to former goalkeeper Kevin Keelan, who holds the record for the most appearances, playing 673 games between 1963 and 1980, before finally hanging up his gloves.
