QPR History

Queens Park Rangers was founded in 1886 after a merge of two prior clubs – Christchurch Rangers (1882) and St. Jude’s Institute (1886). Seven years later, QPR introduced their new green and white hooped shirts in which they won their first-ever trophy, the West London Observer Cup. Ahead of the 1895-96 season, the Rs entered the English FA Cup for the first time and just four seasons later at the start of the century, they turned professional joining the Southern League.

In 1907, the R’s were crowned Southern League champions and they were also runners-up in the first-ever Charity Shield. Ten years later, the Hoops moved to Loftus Road which is still their home of football to this day; however, in the summer of 2019, the 18,000+ all-seater stadium was renamed as Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium as the naming rights were given to a local charity close to the club.

In 1920-21, QPR joined the Football League for the first time, and five years later, their club colours were changed to blue and white hoops, with all-time record goalscorer, George Goddard signing for the club. Get the latest QPR news from the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium here!

Moving on to a historical moment in QPR’s history, they were crowned champions of the 1966-67 Division Three, and were also winners of the first-ever League Cup final to be played at Wembley Stadium, with an iconic 3-2 win over West Bromwich Albion. The following season also marked history for the R’s as they finished as runners-up of Division Two which secured their place in Division One for the first time. QPR’s ‘golden era’ fell between 1975 and the start of the new millennium.

In 1975-76, the R’s were runners-up in Division One, and qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time in history. They also had five players in the England squad at the time, including Gerry Francis as captain. After relegation to Division Two in 1979, Terry Venables was appointed as manager of the club, and in 1982-83, he won QPR promotion back up to the first division. In 1983-84, Guinness were the club’s first shirt sponsors and at the end of this season the R’s managed to qualify for European football once again after finishing fifth.

In 1991-92, Gerry Francis took over as manager of the R’s, and the following season they were members of the inaugural Premier League where they finished fifth – the club’s highest-ever finish in the Football League. Les Ferdinand left the R’s in 1995-96 for a record fee of £6m, and the club were relegated to the second tier. In 2001, the R’s were relegated down to Division Two, before winning promotion to the Championship in 2004. Since then, QPR have competed in the Championship and had another two brief spells in the Premier League from 2011-13 and from 2014-15.
