He would be a fine addition for Nathan Jones’ side, wouldn’t he? Joe Aribo has certainly heightened his profile this season at the heart of Charlton’s promotion-winning campaign. Given his displays in midfield for the Addicks, it will have surely caught the eyes of some potential suitors.
The physical nature of League One means that it is not easy for technicians, like Aribo, to gain control of the game and influence it heavily. However, it is a sign of a special talent if they can do so at just 22-years-old, dictating the play so wisely, regaining possession so effortlessly and attacking in the final third so prominently.
Aribo has been gradually influencing games more and more at Charlton in recent years. Having broken into the side in 2016/17, it was not until this season that he managed to consistently start in the third tier of English football across the campaign and perform ever so consistently too.
The Englishman netted 10 times and provided five assists across his 39 appearances for Charlton and although they will too be in the Championship next season, it comes as no surprise to see that according to Allnigeriasoccer.com, via the Stoke Sentinel, that the Potters are said to have opened talks with Aribo about a move to Stoke once his Charlton contract expires this summer.
With Stoke now said to be keen to alter their approach in the transfer market, having spent big last summer, it seems this year they could prioritise bringing in up-and-coming youngsters and Aribo fits the bill perfectly. The fact that it could be on a free makes the deal all the more ideal for Stoke.
Aribo would add some much-needed creativity to the Stoke midfield. The Potters may have technically impressive players, which he is too, but they also lack someone with the quality to drive with the ball from midfield and trouble the opposition, giving them one more aspect of Stoke’s attack to worry about.
Given that Stoke scored the third-fewest number of goals in the league last season, a creative outlet from midfield who can help out with the goals and provide more chances for the forwards is necessary. Aribo can be that man to do so.
As Stoke will look to improve on their finish last season, the signing of Aribo would suit them perfectly and go a long way to helping them towards getting a play-off spot by the end of next season.
