Bristol Rovers History

Bristol Rovers were originally formed with the evocative title of ‘Black Arabs’, in late 1883 following a meeting of five young school teachers. They took the name from their black gowns and from a rugby club known as the Awabs, who played on an adjacent pitch in East Bristol.

The club soon after became known as Eastville Rovers in 1884 to encourage players from broader areas to play. Later they underwent another name change, this time to Bristol Rovers which was adopted at the start of the 1888 season when the Football League was founded. They became known as the Pirates in the early 1930s after the use of a pirate logo in their programme, and this was replicated to their football kits.

Rovers play their home games at the Memorial Stadium in Horfield, the ground opened in 1921 and they used to share it with Bristol Rugby. The pirates share a local rivalry with city neighbours Bristol City, and their famous derby match dates back years, despite the different divisions they are both now part of. The Pirates do not have a great list of honours; however, they managed impressive back-to-back promotions from the conference to reach League One, where they are playing today. In 2015-16 they finished third to guarantee automatic promotion from League Two to One, and since joining the higher league, they have struggled to reach the play-offs for a chance to get promoted into the Championship.
