Charlton: Lyle Taylor praises strike partner Andre Green after Barnsley win - Charlton Athletic News

Charlton picked up a crucial three points last Saturday in overcoming Barnsley 2-1 and Lee Bowyer should feel very satisfied with the goal returns of his strike partnership.

The Addicks had a new-look attack with Andre Green partnering Lyle Taylor up-front, and their talismanic figure, who finished as the team’s top scorer last term, made a big impact in his first start since returning from injury. Indeed, perhaps if Taylor had been fit enough to play in more than 15 games it is possible that Charlton wouldn’t find themselves in their current predicament given his form when fit, and Bowyer will be hopeful that the striker can maintain his fitness.

Eight league goals from those games shows just how effective Taylor is, and alongside Green, he could prove to be even more dangerous, though he took the time to acknowledge the work of his partner against the Tykes.

As reported by London News Online, Taylor said:

“For 45 minutes, or as long as my legs were holding out, me and Dre were a real handful. I have to heap praise on him. He’s had a tough week with family stuff.

“For him to turn up and do what he did today – you could see what that goal meant to him.”

There is some truth in what the Charlton no.9 says, but if the team is to widen the gap to the relegation places they may need more from their attacking players.

Both strikers getting on the scoresheet and showing poaching instinct in doing so is a positive, but neither Green nor Taylor had much influence aside from that, despite what the latter says. Green managed just one key pass and one dribble against Barnsley, while Taylor failed to produce in both of those departments, despite coming up against the team placed second from bottom in the table.

The worry, therefore, is how the pair will fare when coming up against more accomplished defenders, as they could become dependent on service from the likes of Jonny Williams and Josh Cullen.

However, if they can maintain their effectiveness in and around the penalty area, particularly from set-pieces, then they may be able to repeat the goals from Saturday and guide the team to safety.
