Charlton Athletic History
Charlton Athletic are an English football club with a great history they should be proud of. They were originally founded in the summer of 1905, after a number of youth clubs in south-east London combined to form Charlton Athletic Football Club. Charlton’s home ground has been The Valley since 1919, and the historic stadium now holds over 27,000 spectators. The club have had a number of preferred nicknames over the years including the Valiants and the Robins, though the Addicks is the one that has stuck.
It is one of the most unique nicknames in football, and it can be traced back to the clubs formative years where a fishmongers was located, owned by Arthur Bryan. Bryan supplied haddock and chips to the players after each Charlton match, and South London linguistics meant that the food became ‘addick and chips’, and thus the Addicks (haddocks) nickname was born. Charlton decided to turn professional in 1920, 15 years after their formation, and they first entered the Football League in 1921 joining the Third Division South. The Addicks most notable success came during the late 1930s, after winning back-to-back promotions up to the top flight of English football. During just their first season among the countries best in the First Division, the Addicks almost clinched the title, though fell short finishing second which is their highest ever finish in the Football League.
Since entering the Football League, Charlton have enjoyed four separate periods in the top flight of English Football: 1936-1957, 1986-1990, 1998-1999 and 2000-2007. The Addicks have reached two FA Cup finals in their history and they were back-to-back, in the seasons of 1945-46 and 1946-47. They triumphed on their second attempt in 1947, winning 1-0 against Burnley at Wembley Stadium.
The Addicks managed to notably reach the Premier League at the start of the millennium, and they lasted an impressive seven seasons against some of the best teams in Europe.
The competition proved to be too tough however, and in 2008-09, Charlton were relegated back down to the Championship and just two seasons later, down to League One after a flurry of financial issues. After a change in ownership and the return of former player Chris Powell as manager, the Addicks managed to clinch the League One title in 2011-12. This time the Addicks would last in the second tier for four seasons before facing relegation down to League One once again. Only recently at the end of the 2018-19 season, Charlton managed to fight their way back up to the Championship after finishing third.
