Leeds United: Phil Hay discusses how the club rates Lee Bowyer - Leeds United

Phil Hay has given some insight into Leeds United’s thoughts on Championship manager Lee Bowyer after he was linked with a possible move to West Bromwich Albion.

Phil Hay’s comments on Bowyer

According to James Nursey it is a ‘huge game for Slaven Bilic’s future on Sunday when Albion host Tottenham. Albion are yet to win and Slaven Bilic is not happy with financial backing post promotion so something may give in over the international break. Lee Bowyer is supposedly in the frame if he goes.’

In reply to this, Hay said: ‘Leeds have always thought highly of Bowyer as a coach. West Brom would be quite a jump for him but interesting if it was to happen.’

Could Bowyer be a good future coach for Leeds?

With Bielsa only signing short contracts, Leeds constantly have to be wary that he might not want to extend his deal. Therefore it is good to hear that the club keep an eye on other managers in case they need a replacement. Bowyer’s current job at Charlton is his first ever managerial stint.

His performances at the Addicks has clearly been noticed though, as fellow Championship manager Gary Rowett praised him. He said: ‘Lee has done brilliantly well this year’.

It isn’t an easy job at Charlton as they have had issues with their owners and money has always been tight, but Bowyer has managed 1.49 points per match (Transfermarkt). He has been in charge of 128 games, winning 55 , drawing 26 and losing 47. Despite Charlton now being back in League One, he had managed to get them into the Championship, which was an achievement in itself. Perhaps with a bit more support he could have kept them there.

With no Premier League experience, the possibility of him becoming Leeds manager could be a slight risk, but he is a good option for the future and this is proven by his very decent record at Charlton.
