Derby County History
Derby County were formed in 1884, as an off-shoot of Derbyshire County Cricket Club – formed some 13 years earlier, with football growing more popular. In 1888, the Football League was founded and Derby County were among the 11 other founder members of the competition. The Rams competed in Division One of the Football League until 1906-07, when they faced relegation down to Division Two where they played for just five seasons before winning their first league title in 1911-12, subsequently earning their spot back in the top flight. League football was suspended in 1946 after the Second World War, though the FA Cup restarted in 1945-46, and it saw Derby enjoy their finest moment since their formation.
The Rams defeated Charlton Athletic 4-1 in the final at Wembley Stadium, in front of almost 100,000 spectators. The 1971-72 season marked a historic day for Derby County as they were crowned champions of England for the first time ever. The Rams did not lose a league game until the middle of October, and the title race went right down to the wire when Derby beat Liverpool in their final game of the season. Despite this, it was out of their hands, as both Leeds United and Liverpool had a game to play, but against all odds, both results were in Derbys favour which saw them lift the Division One title in style.
The Rams also claimed the Texaco Cup and their reserves won the Central League, which made the season that even more special. European football came to Derby for the first time thanks to their top-flight title, though their European Cup dreams were shattered by the Grand Old Lady of Turin , Juventus. Just three seasons later in 1974-75, Derby incredibly managed to put their name to a second Division One title, after a 0-0 home draw to already-relegated Carlisle United on the final day saw them through to the prestigious achievement.
In recent years, the Rams enjoyed two more spells in the Premier League; first from 1996-97 to 2001-02, and once more in 2007-08, where they accumulated a record low 11 points. Since then, Derby have given their all to win promotion back up to the Premier League.
Former England international and Chelsea legend, Frank Lampard was appointed as the club’s new manager in May 2018, and he led the Rams to play-off final against Aston Villa, but suffered a 2-1 defeat to miss out on a place in the Premier League.
