Plymouth Argyle History
Plymouth Argyle Football Club was founded in 1886, after two friends decided the town needed a football team for local people to play and support. Grose and Pettybridge arranged a meeting at the Borough Arms, and after a discussion, they agreed on the name “Plymouth Argyle” as we know them today. Grose played center-back for the newly formed team and became the first ever club captain. In 1903, the Pilgrims became a professional football club and a limited liability company was formed under the guidance of local businessman Clarence Spooner. At the end of the successful year for the club, the Pilgrims were accepted into the Southern League ahead of the 1903-04 season, and in their first professional game, they managed to beat West Ham United 1-0 away in the Western League. Argyle were crowned Southern League champions in 1912-13, almost ten years after joining the division, and were also runners up on two occasions – check out the latest Plymouth Argyle news here!
The Pilgrims joined the Football League Division Three (South) in 1920, and finished runners up six times in a row from 1921-22. They finally managed to win promotion up to the Football League Division Two in 1929-30, when they clinched the Division Three South title, with attendances that season reaching over 20,000 on a regular basis. The Pilgrims arrived at their new stadium Home Part in the 1954-55 season, and they still play there today. In 1965, Plymouth reached the League Cup semi-final, though were defeated by Leicester City. Astonishingly, arguably the greatest footballer of all time, Pele, arrived at Home Park with his Santos team in March 1973. The match was arranged as part of their European tour and amazingly, Argyle came out victorious, winning 3-2 in front of over 37,000 spectators. Brazil were the World Cup champions at the time, and this memorable moment will surely go down in history, despite it being a friendly match. In recent years, Plymouth enjoyed their most successful seasons in club history. In 2001-02, the Pilgrims claimed the Division Three title after earning a record 102 points. In 2003-04, their success followed and Argyle were crowned Division Two champions and were promoted to the newly formed Coca-Cola Championship for the first time in history. This was the highest level football Plymouth had ever played in the Football League pyramid, and they managed to successfully enjoy playing in the division for an impressive six seasons with 10th as their best finish in 2007-08. Moving on, Plymouth had many ups and downs between League One and League Two, and at the end of their 2018-19 campaign, the Pilgrims were relegated back down to League Two where they are currently battling to earn their way back up.
