Newcastle: Magpies could sign Moussa Diaby ‘in summer’

Newcastle: Magpies could sign Moussa Diaby 'in summer' - Newcastle United News

Newcastle United could make a fresh approach to sign Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby ‘in summer’, according to journalist Christian Falk.

The Lowdown: The story so far

The Frenchman’s contract with Xabi Alonso’s outfit isn’t set to expire until 2025, but he’s an individual who has been a long-standing target at St. James’ Park.

Sky Sports first named the 23-year-old as a player of interest to the Magpies in July 2022, though a move at the time obviously failed to materialise.

The Latest: Falk’s comments

According to Falk (via CaughtOffside), Newcastle reignited that interest in January but Diaby wasn’t available last month.

However, he may be tempted to take a second bite at the cherry later in the summer. He wrote:

“I heard Newcastle said that he’s a good option for the club, so they passed their shortlist on to the Sheikh, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has his own scout in Germany. He had to check if Diaby was a possibility they could explore.

“Ultimately, they saw that it wouldn’t be an option for the winter, so they went for Anthony Gordon. In summer, however, Diaby could be easier to sign.”

Toon fans, do you remember who scored your first goal of the 2022 calendar year?

The Verdict: Massive coup

Eddie Howe’s side also reportedly submitted an enquiry for the forward last month, but whilst that eventually lead to nothing as well, the Magpies could be given another chance to bring him to the Premier League.

Diaby has proven to be a real threat at Leverkusen so it would be a massive coup should PIF be able to get a deal for him over the line in the next transfer window.

The left-footed dynamo has clocked up 85 goal contributions in just 149 appearances at the BayArena and currently averages 2.2 shots and 1.9 key passes per Bundesliga game (WhoScored).

The Paris native’s form has also seen him labelled ‘deadly’ by talent scout Jacek Kulig, and there’s no reason he wouldn’t be open to the move should Howe’s men secure a place in the Champions League.

However, if Newcastle wish to back Howe with his signing later this year, the rumoured price could be around £68 million.
