Bradford City: Club must wake-up next season if they are relegated from League One
It has been a shocking campaign for Bradford City this year, hasn’t it Bantams fans?
The Yorkshire-based outfit, who are currently bottom of League One are on the verge of being relegated having fallen six points adrift of 20th-placed Southend United. With tough fixtures to come against the likes of Charlton Athletic, Coventry City and Doncaster Rovers, it is looking extremely bleak for Gary Bowyer’s side who are in need of a miracle to avoid the drop.
The nightmare which Bradford have experienced this season, however, could just be the start of a much wider problem at Valley Parade if they do not address their failures in the summer. Chairman Stefan Ruff’s appointment of Bowyer earlier this month does not mean that the Bantams’ fortunes will suddenly change as the performances by their players have been well below what is expected for a third tier side.
If they keep the nucleus of their squad for the 2019/20 campaign, it would not be surprising if they find themselves in a similar position in League Two, following in the footsteps of Chesterfield who suffered a similar fate in 2018.
Despite being labelled as one of the favourites to achieve promotion to the third tier last season, the Spireites were relegated to the Vanarama National League just a year after they had dropped down to League One. To avoid this disastrous scenario, Ruff must back his manager in the transfer market in the summer as Bradford’s long-term future may rely on bringing in a fresh squad of players who have not been tainted by relegation.
With Bowyer at the helm, the Bantams have a manager who could bring success to the club if given the right tools yet a failure to do so could easily lead to even more turbulent times in the coming years.
