Bradford City: April clashes could lead to miraculous League 1 survival
It seems as if everything that could go wrong for Bradford City this season has done.
Last year’s mid-table finish must seem as though it was a lifetime ago for a Bantams side who are currently bottom of League One and facing the real prospect of their first season in the fourth tier since 2013.
Yet although it is highly probable that Bradford will be relegated at the end of the current campaign, they still have time to launch a miraculous recovery in the final eight games of the season.
Although fixtures against the likes of play-off chasing Charlton Athletic and Coventry City may not yield too many points, the Bantams’ clashes with Bristol Rovers and Gillingham in April could represent an opportunity to close the gap between them and Southend United.
If Gary Bowyer’s side manage to pick up six points from those two games, it could set up mouth-watering fixtures against Scunthorpe and AFC Wimbledon who are both at risk of the drop this season.
Furthermore, even if the Bantams are relegated, they could benefit from a good end to the season going into next year’s campaign where they will be wanting to bounce back at the first time of asking. With four teams achieving promotion from League Two, Bradford would fancy their chances, especially if Bowyer is giving the necessary funds to bring in his own players in the summer.
However, it goes without question that the Yorkshire-based outfit will want to keep their place in League One and to do this they must make rapid adjustments to their performance levels. If Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Valley Parade to Blackpool is replicated during the club’s final seven fixtures, they have little chance of staying up regardless on what the teams around them do.
Therefore, it is imperative that they show some fight, even if it is ultimately in a losing cause.
