Bradford City History

In 1903 Manningham FC converted to football from rugby, and they secured election to the Football League after recruiting players for a new team – Bradford City AFC, as they are known today. Four years later in 1907, they were crowned champions of Division Two, and just four years later marked history for the club as they won the FA Cup for the first and only time. The Bantams were the first holders of the new trophy, as they defeated Newcastle United 1-0 in replay, the FA Cup was designed in Bradford, home of the club.

Bradford City are a club with one of the highest achievements out of many in League Two, in 1999-00, the Bantams were promoted to the Premier League for the first time since 1922. This came after winning promotion from Division One (now known as the Championship) by finishing second. Their spell in the top flight did not last long however, after just two seasons in the Premier League, they were sadly relegated back down to Division One after finishing bottom of the table. Their season was not all full of negatives, as they managed to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Intertoto Cup, the first time they had played in a European competition.

Having spent three seasons in the second tier, they were relegated once again, this time to League One. Dean Windass scored an impressive 28 goals in his first season back at the club, and subsequently was Bradford’s top goal-scorer for the next two seasons to follow. This was not good enough for Bradford however, and in 2006-07 they were relegated down to League Two for the first time in over 20 years. Success followed six seasons later when they managed to defeat Northampton 3-0 in the play-off finals at Wembley, and regain their position in League One. After another six seasons, but this time in League One, they were relegated once more to League Two at the end of 2019.

Currently, Bradford are fighting for a spot in the play-offs to win promotion back up to League One. Stuard McCall was named as the club’s new manager after returning for his third stint at the helm. The 55-year old took over from Gary Bowyer earlier in the year, and he hopes to finish the season on a high with the help of star player James Vaughan, who is currently on 11 goals this season.
