Southampton: Paul Onuachu could be the next one through the door

Southampton: Paul Onuachu could be the next one through the door - Premier League News

Journalist Sacha Tavolieri has insisted that Southampton are now in a race against time to secure the signing of Paul Onuachu.

The Lowdown: Southampton looking to be busy

The Saints look set to be one of the most active clubs in the Premier League on deadline day, as they look to have won the race for the signing of Kamaldeen Sulemana for around £22m.

The next signing that could follow the young attacker through the door is Genk striker Onuachu, with the 28-year-old having reportedly already agreed to join the Saints, though a fee is yet to be agreed, according to Tavolieri.

Onuachu would indeed provide Nathan Jones with even more options in the final third – something Southampton desperately need given they’ve found the back of the net just 17 times in the league this term.

The Latest: Onuachu could be the next target

Tavolieri has revealed on Twitter that Southampton appear to have won Onuachu over, with the striker willing to join the club and must now be quick in agreeing a transfer fee, with Belgian outfit Genk wanting €18m (£16m).

The journalist wrote: “We already told you about it on January 19th!  #SouthamptonFC pushes for Paul #Onuachu who has already agreed to join the #SaintsFC when he was less convinced at the start of #mercato. #KRCGenk wants €18M. Run against time.”

The Verdict: Jones keen to add more goals

It’s not as if Southampton don’t have the bodies in the centre-forward position to offer Jones options, it’s just that none of them are prolific in the top flight, with Che Adams and Adam Armstrong only netting five times between them this season.

Onuachu would certainly add a potent goal threat to Southampton’s attack as he has been in scintillating form this season, netting 16 times in just 19 league appearances, while he would also bring a lot of top-flight experience to the team, albeit from spells in Belgium and Denmark.

Angus Gunn arrived from Man City in the the summer of 2018, how much did he cost?

The Nigerian ace would also bring something different to Adams and Armstrong in the form of height and being a target man as he stands at six-foot-seven and would tower above the two current strikers at Southampton.
