West Ham: David Moyes refused January loan backing

West Ham: David Moyes refused January loan backing - Premier League News

West Ham manager David Moyes refused the option to attempt late January loan moves despite the board being ready to do so.

The Lowdown: Quiet deadline day…

The Hammers made just one senior signing last month, bringing in striker Danny Ings from Aston Villa for around £15 million in their fight against relegation.

West Ham completed a shrewd deal with the capture of Ings, but in a horrible twist of fortune, the Englishman succumbed to injury almost immediately after putting pen to paper.

He now joins the likes of Gianluca Scamacca and Kurt Zouma on the Irons injury list as Moyes now looks toward maintaining his side’s Premier League status.

The Latest: Moyes turns down board backing…

According to club insider Claret & Hugh, the Hammers board, and by extension owners GSBK, were ‘ready’ to back Moyes with loan deals heading into January deadline day.

There was also apparently ‘money available’ to do this, however, Moyes ‘decided against’ making any moves – clearly satisfied with the squad at his disposal.

The Verdict: Interesting…

The Scotsman lead West Ham to back-to-back European qualification campaigns before this year’s fight against the drop.

Moyes’ mentality of no more signings was perhaps meant not to create an imbalance in the squad or upset the current crop – potentially yearning to find the right balance in his team.

West Ham were very active in the summer window, after all, yet we can also understand the other argument to be made that they’re in need of both defensive back up and more attacking options.

Injuries to Scamacca and Ings highlight the latter point whilst the sale of veteran defender Craig Dawson has left Moyes one man short for his backline.

West Ham are in dire need of a winning run now and supporters will be hoping they can build upon recent victories against Everton and Derby County.
