Sunderland: Journalist claims club ignored Mowbray's transfer pleas - Championship News

Journalist Phil Smith believes that Tony Mowbray made it no secret he wanted more signings in January, only for Sunderland to ignore him.

The Lowdown: Sunderland not as active as they could’ve been

The Black Cats have found themselves in an exciting position heading into the second half of the season, just two points off the play-off spots and having picked up huge wins in recent times.

However, the injury to Ross Stewart has halted their progress, as he was their top scorer last season as well as this term, but they do have Joe Gelhardt at the club until the end of the season, who’s already got six Premier League goal involvements to his name.

Sunderland could have done with at least one more player arriving to help bolster their options in the final third and Mowbray also appears to feel strongly about that, although any pleas went ignored.

The Latest: Mowbray fails to get backing

Smith has claimed on The Roar podcast that Mowbray told him how he’d wanted more signings during one of his press conferences.

He said: “We know the situation’s not ideal. I mean, I was in a press conference with Tony Mowbray on Saturday and he was really optimistic about where the team’s going, and he wasn’t sort of banging his fists and making demands, but he made it pretty clear that this is an incredibly young team and we need some help in terms of bodies, otherwise, it’s going to be really difficult for us to sustain what we’re doing.

“But I think even if we account for the fact that there have been some scarcely incredible sort of events that have gone on, to come out of two windows, really, without the adequate striking options is pretty poor.”

The Verdict: Black Cats taking a big gamble

While bringing in someone such as Joe Gelhardt will be exciting for Sunderland as he’s seen as a top young talent that has Premier League experience under his belt, it’s a lot of pressure on such young shoulders.

Sunderland could well have been in the hunt for a spot in the play-offs and securing promotion back into the Premier League, which would have been fitting given they ended up in League One after successive relegations all those years ago.

However, with just one senior striker on their books and Tony Mowbray having to bring on a 15-year-old talent in the last two FA Cup games would suggest that the Black Cats don’t have the necessary bodies to maintain this level of form.
