Barnsley: Daniel Stendel convinced that goals and wins will come - Barnsley News

Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel remains confident that his team can become more prolific in front of goal and will soon arrest a lengthy winless streak.

Speaking with the club’s official website barnsleyfc.co.uk, he felt that his team were better than Nottingham Forest for long periods during Saturday’s 0-1 defeat, their eighth match in all competitions without a win and third in a row without scoring.

Stendel told barnsleyfc.co.uk: “In our last three games, we had more chances to score than in our first four games before but we’ve not scored a goal – this is crazy, but it’s reality.

“This is our team and we’ve shown that we can win games in this league and I hope we can change the results and be happy.”

Goalscoring has become a major issue for Barnsley this season – with just four goals from their first eight league matches, they are the lowest scorers in the Championship. [via Sky Sports]

Based on their current average of 0.5 goals per game, they are currently on course to end the season with 23 league goals – West Brom, the highest scorers in the division, already have 15, while six players have scored more on their own than Barnsley have as a squad.

Stendel has a point when he claims that Barnsley are at least creating chances – they have averaged 13.8 shots per game in the Championship so far this season (via WhoScored) but scored only 0.5 goals per game, which works out at one goal for every 27.6 shots, a rather dismal success rate.

In their last two matches against Leeds and Nottingham Forest, they had 17 and 16 shots respectively, but nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. They actually had five more shots than the home side at the City Ground on Saturday but could not take advantage of that supremacy.

While they had been affected by the absence of last season’s joint top scorer Cauley Woodrow for three games due to a calf injury and sold the other top scorer Kieffer Moore to Wigan, Barnsley’s hit rate in front of goal has simply not been good enough.

Wingers Luke Thomas and Mallik Wilks have one goal each from 715 and 680 minutes respectively. Midfielders Mike Bahre and Alex Mowatt have yet to find the net in 535 and 527 minutes respectively, especially disappointing for the latter after his eight goals last season.

Stendel is justified in his belief that Barnsley will improve their scoring return, as the chances are being created, while their next game is at home to Brentford, the next lowest scorers in the Championship with just five goals.

However, if their lack of end product continues to affect them after another eight games, then Stendel’s current optimism could well give way to grave concern.
