Sheffield Wednesday: Owls unlikely to re-sign Harlee Dean

Sheffield Wednesday: Owls unlikely to re-sign Harlee Dean - League One News

Sheffield Wednesday are unlikely to pursue a move to bring defender Harlee Dean back to League One, according to journalist Joe Crann.

The Lowdown: Dean’s loan spell

The Birmingham City centre-back spent the second half of last season on loan at the Hillsborough Stadium but returned to his parent club later in the summer.

The 31-year-old will be out of contract at St. Andrews at the end of the campaign, and having not yet put pen to paper on fresh terms, his future is currently up in the air, though the chances of him staging an Owls comeback appear slim.

The Latest: Crann rules out return

Taking to Twitter, Crann was asked by a Wednesday supporter whether the club might try to re-sign Dean given his contract situation and lack of game time, to which he responded:

“No mate, haven’t heard anything on that. Doubt he’d want to go from not playing there to probably not playing here though.”

The Verdict: McGuinness replacement?

Mark McGuinness has been recalled by Cardiff City, leaving a vacant spot at the heart of the defence, and Dean, despite only starting seven games this season, would be the perfect replacement if the situation now changes.

The 6 foot 3 colossus currently averages a remarkable 4.7 clearances and 4.1 aerial duels won per Championship game, highlighting the rock he can be at the centre of a backline (WhoScored).

Dean has also been dubbed a ‘leader’ by journalist Josh Bunting, and considering he could be available on a cut-price deal this month, this might be a move worth exploring.
