Manchester United transfer target Cody Gakpo has now been convinced about joining the club, according to journalist Dean Jones.
The Lowdown: Man United’s Gakpo interest
Sky Sports reported back in August that Man United were preparing a move for PSV Eindhoven forward Gakpo, who was rated at £35m at the time.
The move did not transpire, but the Dutchman’s impressive displays for his national side at the World Cup appear to have reignited Erik ten Hag’s interest, after he netted three goals in five matches in Qatar.
As per the Mirror, the Red Devils are looking to capitalise on financial trouble at PSV to sign the 23-year-old, and they have now opened talks with his current club about a January transfer switch.
The Latest: Jones’ update
According to a new update from Jones, writing for GIVEMESPORT, Gakpo has already been convinced about joining Man United, with the financial details now needing to fall into place if a January move is to happen.
The 6 foot 4 speedster is said to be impressed by Ten Hag’s coaching methods, and so the onus is now on the United recruitment team to conclude a deal, which should amount to around £40m.
The Verdict: Get it done
Ten Hag needs a forward to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, who the club decided to part with on a mutual basis back in November, and the 14-time Netherlands international would be a great fit, particularly because of his versatility.
In his last 50 matches, the ‘fantastic’ player, as lauded by Fabrizio Romano, has played on the left 30 times, but he has also impressed in a central role, netting a goal and the second-highest SofaScore rating of any Netherlands player in this position against Qatar.
At club level, Gakpo has been seriously impressive, scoring nine and assisting 12 in 14 Eredivisie appearances this term, displaying his talents in front of goal, and he would be a very good addition for Ten Hag to help bolster United’s bid for Champions League football.
