Chelsea: Enzo Fernandez 'wants' to join Graham Potter's Blues - Chelsea News

Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez ‘wants’ to seal a move to Chelsea in the January transfer window, according to an update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Chelsea’s primary target

In recent days, the 21-year-old has stood out as arguably the Blues’ main transfer target, as Graham Potter looks to make a significant midfield addition.

Fernandez has become a household name after winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, excelling for the champions and being named the Best Young Player at the tournament.

It appears increasingly likely that Chelsea will get their man as a new update has emerged in the last 24 hours.

The Latest: Enzo ‘wants’ transfer

Writing on Twitter on Tuesday morning, Romano claimed that Fernandez is personally keen on signing a deal to play under Potter, with further talks expected on Tuesday:

“Chelsea and Benfica will hold new direct talks today for Enzo Fernandez. The deal is advanced as reported last week, but Rui Costa’s final approval is still pending – as key step to get it done.

“Enzo has agreed terms with Chelsea last Wednesday. He wants the move.”

The Verdict: Game-changing signing?

Fernandez is exactly what Chelsea are after in their midfield, with the likes of N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and even Mateo Kovacic all feeling like ageing figures these days, despite still offering quality.

At 21, the Argentine hero is someone who could come in and add a new lease of life in the middle of the park, combining brilliance on the ball with hard work off it. At the World Cup, he scored and assisted once apiece, as well as averaging 3.1 tackles per game.

There is a feeling that Chelsea need an injection of magic in order to bolster their top-four challenge, and in Fernandez, they would be signing a special player with an enormous future ahead of him.
