Leeds United history
Following the disbanding of Leeds City FC, the club was formed in 1919, managed by Dick Ray, and took over the famous Elland Road stadium, where they have remained to this day.
Huddersfield Town’s chairman Hilton Crowther loaned the board £35k on the provision they repay the debt after the team won Division One.
Leeds United joined the Football League for the first time in 1920 and yo-yo’d between the top two tiers for a number of years.
Despite serious financial difficulty, former player Don Revie was appointed manager in March 1961, and he turned his squad into one of the greatest football teams of all time.
After the Englishman left to take charge of the national team, Leeds slowly started to decline in form. Matters were made even worse when it was revealed the club was in dire straits under Peter Ridsdale, with heavy loans and unpaid debts. Ridsdale eventually gave way to Ken Bates.
Amid turmoil behind the scenes, the Peacocks frequently changed hands, until current owner Andrea Radrizzani bought out Massimo Cellino in 2017.
How many trophies have Leeds United won?
The Yorkshire club is one of the most successful English teams, winning the First Division on three occasions so far, lifting the title twice during Revie’s thirteen-year-spell. United have also won the FA Cup, League Cup and Charity Shield.
Leeds United Facts
Originally, the team kit was modelled on Huddersfield’s blue and white stripes, as Crowther tried to orchestrate a merge. Leeds switched to blue and yellow halves bearing the city crest in 1934, and later changed to yellow shirts with blue sleeves and collars, before switching to blue shirts with gold collars in homage to the classic Leeds City colours. Finally, Don Revie introduced the recognisable all-white strip in 1961, heavily inspired by European giants Real Madrid.
