Rangers: Stephen McGinn claims Alfredo Morelos will leave

Rangers: Stephen McGinn claims Alfredo Morelos will leave - Podcasts

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos will leave the club in the summer, according to Stephen McGinn.

The Lowdown: Morelos’ contract

Morelos’ £33k-per-week contract at Ibrox is due to expire at the end of the season with no extension in sight.

The Colombian’s six-year stay at Rangers is currently set to come to a close with Sky Sports reporting in December that Gers chairman Douglas Park claimed terms for a new deal may be “unattainable”.

Morelos played a bit part role under Giovanni van Bronckhorst at the beginning of the season, starting just one SPFL game this season under the Dutchman.

But since Beale’s arrival, the 26-year-old has found himself back as the main man.

The Latest: McGinn’s comments

Despite his resurgence under Beale, McGinn said on The Go Radio Football Show Podcast that Rangers need to bring in January signings, amid his belief that the writing is on the wall for Morelos’ future in Glasgow.

(56:00) “There’s no doubt I think you need two or three signings to narrow that gap, at the minute the nine points I don’t think that gap comes within that squad, I think it needs help.

“I think they need a new striker and (Antonio) Colak’s had a good season but I think it’s over for Rangers for Morelos, I do watch them though and I do think it’s time for both to move on,” McGinn said.

The Verdict: Long way to go

Despite the belief of McGinn and the seemingly ever-changing position surrounding Morelos’ future at Ibrox, it’s very unlikely he’ll leave at a cut-price in the January window.

With no decision either from the 26-year-old over where his future lies, the Gers will have the majority of the remainder of the season to convince him to pen a new deal under his former coach who’s re-made him the main man.

With Colak returning as an unused sub against Celtic following 11 goals and two assists in 14 games in the SPFL this campaign, the next few weeks could be key to the Colombian’s future regarding whether or not Beale keeps faith in continuing to start him when the Croatian is back to full fitness.
