Carlisle United Record Transfers
Carlisle United are not often the ones to break the bank and fork out huge sums of money on superstar signings. And looking at the deals that have gone through over the years, it has been a while since their last big huzzah. Their current record-holder, for instance, goes way back to the 2001/02 season when they signed Richie Foran from Shelbourne FC for a reported sum of £216,000.
And it’s important to note that the 21-year-old winger’s arrival also meant Steven Hayward’s record fee of £113,000 from the 1994/95 campaign was finally broken. Interestingly enough, they would then come close to breaking it again some years further down the line.
The closest they got, however, was back in 2006/07 when they purchased Joe Garner from Blackburn Rovers for £189,000, and that is still their second-biggest arrival at the club to date. Kevan Hursts’ £153,000 price tag from 2009/10 finalises the top three most expensive purchases United have ever done.
On the other hand, among the departures, we once again have Garner himself as he became their most lucrative sale ever when he exited to Nottingham Forest for £1.4m just a couple of seasons after his arrival.
Ian Harte’s £1.1m move to Reading and Gary Madine’s £1m departure to Sheffield Wednesday are the next two in line after Garner. Interestingly enough, those three are also the only three to surpass the one-million-pound mark at the club.
Famous Carlisle United Transfers
Chris Balderstone simply has to get a shout on the list of the most famous transfers at Carlisle United. And yes, even though he was indeed bought for a sum that would be laughable nowadays, Balderstone ended up spending a decade at the club, becoming one of the most recognisable figures on their books.
Michael Bridges is also worthy of more than just a passing mention. Even though his stints were indeed just loan deals, he was often the unlikely saviour to help the club during some of their toughest times.
Lastly, let’s not forget about Hughie McIlmoyle for his three spells at Carlisle United which turned him into an icon and every single return was met with excitement as well.
Of course, there are surely many more names that could be mentioned here with both Foran and Garner standing out for their big fees back in the day.
