Mansfield Town Record Transfers
Just as is the case with most of the lower tier sides across the globe, Mansfield Town’s record transfers are mostly from the years gone by. The most expensive purchase they have ever made, for example, dates back to the 2002/03 campaign when they snatched Colin Larkin away from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a reported fee of £158,000.
But it’s also interesting to note that the previous record-holder couldn’t stay on top of the pile for too long. Just two seasons before Larkin assumed his throne, there was the now-retired Shayne Bradley who joined from Southampton for a sum of £117,000.
His arrival, of course, would eclipse the man who currently sits in third place, Lee Peacock, and the £90,000 price tag that was paid to Carlisle United in 1997/98. And after Peacock? Intriguingly, the fourth name on the list dates all the way back to 1979/80 when Steve Taylor was bought from Luton Town for that same price of £90,000.
The departures, however, are far more lucrative than that. The Stags’ biggest ever sale is that of Peacock himself who departed for Manchester City in 1990/00 for £675,000, just a couple of years after his arrival.
In 2004/05, they sold Liam Lawrence to Sunderland for £225,000 and then in 2012/13, Luke O’Neill to Burnley for, interestingly enough, the same price tag of £225,000.
Famous Mansfield Town Transfers
Even though Lawrence is a local kid and the product of Mansfield’s academy, his transfer away to Sunderland in 2004/05 was quite a big thing for the club. But there are so many names that simply have to be mentioned on this list.
Adam Murray is surely one of them and after a stellar career as a player, he went on to coach the Stags as a caretaker manager, a player-manager and then as the sole head coach in 2015. That kind of resume surely warrants a shout.
Then there is the icon that is Rod Arnold, a goalie that would initially arrive on a loan deal from Wolves but after penning a permanent deal, he would go on to tally over 400 appearances for Mansfield, etching his name in the history books.
Of course, there are more, like forwards Harry Johnson and Wayne Corden, both of whom had great spells at the club, scoring goals galore and becoming fan-favourites along the way as well.
