Newport County Record Transfers
Tracking down Newport County’s biggest and most expensive signings is not really the easiest of tasks for one simple reason – they are not exactly the spending types and haven’t been buying many players in recent years. So much so that they actually hold the record for that as well.
As of 2017, the Exiles have the oldest club record transfer fee among Football League clubs for the signing of Alan Waddle who joined them from Swansea City for a reported fee of £80,000 back in December of 1980. Needless to say, while this is certainly a surreal fact, it also tells us quite a lot about their overall transfer policy over the years.
Since that signing, however, there were a couple of newer arrivals with a decent price tag as well. The most prominent of those were Christian Jolley’s £20,000 signing in 2013 and Joey Day’s £30,000 one the very next year, although neither could get close to the record-holder from 40 years ago.
But the situation is somewhat better when it comes to departures from the club. Connor Washington left for Peterborough United in the 2013/14 season for a reported fee of £540,000 and he became the Exiles’ biggest piece of business ever in the history of the club.
After him, we have to mention Regan Poole for his exit to Manchester United’s youth side for £180,000 and then going all the way back to the ‘80s, Roger Freestone who moved to Chelsea for £120,000.
These three are still the club’s top three exits to date.
Famous Newport County Transfers
If we are talking about some of their most famous transfers ever, we simply can’t fail to mention Day himself, who was also included in the PFA Team of the Year in 2019 for his great displays for Newport County that year.
Waddle is someone who will likely remain in the history books forever and seeing how he’s still on top of the mountain 40 years since the day he first arrived, it is quite likely that doesn’t change any time soon either.
And then, of course, we have the likes of Dan Butler and the famous Mark Byrne for championing the side during dark times after his arrival and also Padraig Amond who signed for the club in 2017 and was able to provide them with goals galore, many of which will always be fondly remembered.
They might not be in the best of shapes right now but the Exiles still have some pretty big and famous signings on their books.
