Northampton Town Record Transfers

It doesn’t really come as a huge surprise to see that Northampton Town have not broken their transfer record for quite a while now. In fact, Josh Low, a midfielder who was brought in from Oldham Athletic all the way in the 2003/04 season for £180,000, is still their most expensive arrival at the club to date.

His signing also surpassed the former record-holder and a man who is now the second-biggest arrival, Steve Howard. He was bought from Hartlepool United in 1998/99 for a then-record sum of £158,000. We also shouldn’t forget that Northampton Town bought Steve Francis that same campaign too, forking out £135,000 to Huddersfield Town to get their man who is now in fourth position on the list.

In third place, though, there’s Andy Kirk and his £149,000 fee the club splashed out upon his arrival from Boston United, just a year following the purchase of Low, in 2004/05. Interestingly enough, that was the closest they could come to dethroning him ever since, and that is probably the best indication of their transfer policy and the funds that were available.

Still, not only are their top departures more expensive, many of them are also still quite recent. In the 2012/13 season, Northampton Town let Michael Jacobs go as he joined Derby County for £567,000. Needless to say, that figure is still the biggest piece of business the Cobblers have ever done and it is possible that it will stay that way for a while longer.

Still, in 2015/16, Ivan Toney departed the club for Newcastle United and went to play in Premier League, making the club £324,000 along the way, which was a hefty price for a then 19-year-old centre-forward.

Gabor Gyepes is in third place with his £270,000 fee that saw him leave for Cardiff City in 2008/09 while the next transfer in line dates all the way back to the late ‘80s.

Famous Northampton Town Transfers

One of the most famous stories regarding a Northampton Town signing is surely that of Tommy Fowler who decided to join the team following his active service in the army back in France.

Following a sniper wound, he met with Jack Jennings who then invited him to join the team. He would then go on to become a huge part of their history.

Of course, Fowler is not nearly the only one and the likes of late Cliff Holton, who had many fruitful spells with other clubs before joining the Cobblers and etching his name in the history books for that short time he spent at the club, are also worthy of a mention. Some of the more recent transfers deserve a shout as well.

Adebayo Akinfenwa, Jamie Forrester, Low, Kirk or Howard along with the big departures of Jacobs or Toney are some of them.
