Tottenham: Nicolo Zaniolo ‘agreed a move to Spurs’ last year

Tottenham: Nicolo Zaniolo 'agreed a move to Spurs' last year - Premier League News

January transfer target Nicolo Zaniolo actually ‘agreed a move’ to Tottenham last summer, but according to reports out of Italy, one thing stopped it.

The Lowdown: Spurs links…

Spurs have been repeatedly linked with the Italy international for a long time, with reports re-emerging over the winter market’s opening.

The Lilywhites were alleged to have held an interest in Zaniolo with reliable outlets like Sky Sports sharing the player was a target for manager Antonio Conte.

Roma boss Jose Mourinho recently admitted to the press that his midfielder had been asking to leave in the weeks leading up to January but Spurs ultimately couldn’t get him through the door.

The Latest: Zaniolo ‘agreed a move to Spurs’ last summer…

According to newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via Sport Witness, Zaniolo’s dire situation at the Stadio Olimpico could’ve been avoided as far back as last summer.

It is believed that the 6 foot 3 attacker ‘agreed a move to Spurs’ in mid-2022, but one thing halted the proposed transfer.

Roma apparently ‘refused a loan with an obligation of €40m plus another €10m in counterparts’ – thereby halting Zaniolo’s signing.

The Verdict: Transfer blunder…

Looking back, Roma transfer chief Tiago Pinto will surely regret not taking up Tottenham’s offer.

Zaniolo now finds himself in limbo at the club and was even booed off the pitch by supporters recently, owing to the difficult situation under Mourinho.

The Serie A side were even willing to accept around £26.5 million to offload him permanently last month, a near £10m drop from what Spurs could’ve paid at the end of Zaniolo’s proposed loan deal.

Zaniolo’s arrival would have gifted Conte with a versatile attacking option who has been called a ‘beast‘ by members of the media in recent seasons.

As per WhoScored, over 2021/2022, he averaged Roma’s highest rate of completed take-ons per 90 in Serie A whilst also drawing the most fouls – showing just how tricky Zaniolo can be to play against when at his very best.

Indeed, we wouldn’t be surprised if Spurs came forward again this summer, but this time with a lower bid.
