After years of spending so little, Mike Ashley finally broke Newcastle’s long-standing transfer record by paying £39.6m for Brazilian forward Joelinton last summer. A lack of investment in the transfer window inevitably forced Rafa Benitez out the door. Fans are desperate for the billionaire to splash the cash, although it is unclear if Steve Bruce will be given a bigger budget than his predecessor.

The Black and Whites also brought in playmaker Miguel Almiron for £21.6m in January 2019, leapfrogging Tyneside legend Alan Shearer into third place in the list of the club’s most expensive signings. It remains to be seen if anyone will be able to emulate the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer in the campaigns to come.

Former England international Michael Owen sits just in front of Miggy as the Geordies spent £22.5m on the Ballon d’Or winner all the way back in 2005. Albert Luque rounds off the top five.

However, the arrival of Allan Saint-Maximin has been a huge success on-and-off the pitch. Thanks to his explosive pace and hilarious online activity, the Frenchman has quickly become a firm favourite amongst the fanbase. Bruce also handed Andy Carroll a pay-as-you-play deal in August and was instrumental in bringing the Benton academy graduate back to St James’ Park.

With reports of a Saudi takeover bid inbound, it is fair to say Newcastle fans are keeping a close eye on what is happening behind the scenes. The club has been linked to Floyd Mayweather and multiple attempts spearheaded by Amanda Staveley over the years, but a new consortium led by Yasir Al-Rumayyan has entered the mix.

Mags are also bracing themselves for an exodus of players as local lads Sean and Matty Longstaff’s future at the club has yet to be decided.

Club veterans Federico Fernandez, Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Ritchie have all signed new contract extensions and Bruce is keen to sign unwanted Tottenham defender Danny Rose.

The head coach has identified a striker, midfielder and defender as his top priorities in the upcoming transfer window. Joelinton has turned out to be a complete flop, as he has only scored one goal in the English top flight, and extinguished all pre-season hype.
