Blackpool Record Transfers
Blackpool are one of League One’s highest spending football clubs in history, though the majority of their big-money signings came during their one season in the 2010-11 Premier League. During their inaugural Premier League season, the Seasiders splashed out millions of pounds on six top players. This included club-record signing DJ Campbell who arrived from former Championship rivals Leicester City, for £1.35m.
Campbell initially impressed Blackpool during two loan spells at the club in 2009 and 2010, and they finally put pen to paper in 2010 as soon as they won promotion up to the top flight.
The English striker had an impressive one in two-goal record during his three spells at the club and this was the first time Blackpool had ever spent over one million pounds on a player, and it was not the last. Elliot Grandin joined for the same fee but from Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia, and the young French winger had a successful spell for the Seasiders playing 49 games before making his return to the club in 2014 after brief stints at Nice and Crystal Palace.
Chris Basham was the final transfer to arrive for just over £1m as he joined from new Premier League rivals Bolton.
Despite Blackpool’s best efforts to keep up with the country’s best, their top-flight dreams were cut short just after one season, and they were relegated back down to the Championship after finishing 19th. Nevertheless, the Seasiders did not stop spending there, and the following season they brought in a young Tom Ince from Liverpool, and veteran Barry Ferguson from Birmingham City, each for just under £1m.
Famous Blackpool Transfers
The most famous Blackpool transfer has got to be Charlie Adam, who was brought in from Rangers in 2009 and helped the Seasiders achieve promotion up to the top tier. Adam arrived at just 23 years of age for half a million pounds, and caught the eye of giants Liverpool during his time in the Premier League. Liverpool paid over £7.5m for the Scottsman which was over 15x Blackpool purchased him for just two seasons before.
Charlie Adams’ high transfer fee still stands as the club’s record sale in history, over two million than their second-highest sale of Matt Phillips to QPR in 2013-14. Notably, Brett Ormerod’s £2.4m transfer fee still stands as the clubs third highest sale in history all the way back from 2001-02. Ormerod’s high fee is above DJ Campbell and Tom Ince’s £1.80m fees which were both more than Blackpool paid for the pair.
