Coventry City Record Transfers
Coventry City are one of the highest spending League One clubs of all time; however, the majority of their big-spending came during the Sky Blues nine year spell in the Premier League between the inaugural 1992 season and 2001 when they were relegated back down to Division One.
Up until 2000, Robbie Keane was the Sky Blues record signing as he arrived from Wolves for a massive £8.10m fee. The 19-year-old Republic of Ireland international only played during one season for Coventry where he scored 12 times before catching the eye of Italian giants Inter Milan.
Famously, Inter Milan splashed out over £17.5m on the young centre-forward after Coventry were relegated in 2001, and this giant sale still stands as a club record to this day, looking very unlikely to be beaten anytime soon. Just one season after Keane’s arrival, a young Craig Bellamy was brought in from New First Division rivals Norwich for a new record fee of £8.33m.
Just like Keane, the Welsh international only played one season for the Sky Blues before moving to former Premier League rivals Newcastle United for a slightly lower fee of £8.10 which makes the winger the joint second record sale behind Robbie Keane.
Lee Hughes notably joined Coventry City from West Bromwich Albion back in 2001, and the English centre-forward scored 15 times in one season before making his return to West Brom in 2002 for an increased fee of £8.10m, putting him on par with Bellamy’s sale the previous year.
Many of Coventry’s big-money signings did not stay long enough to earn their legendary title, and this once again was the case for Mustapha Hadji who joined the Sky Blues from LaLiga side Deportivo La Coruna at the start of the new millennium.
Hadji joined Coventry for over £5m which made him a record signing at the time along with Keane, and the former Morrocan international only played for two seasons before leaving for Premier League’s Aston Villa in 2001 – the attacking midfielder was sold for a low £3.60m fee.
Famous Coventry City Transfers
One of the Sky Blues most notable transfers over the past few decades is centre-forward and former England international Dion Dublin who arrived from Manchester United in 1994 for just £2.70m Dublin racked up over 140 games for Coventry, scoring 61 times before moving on to Aston Villa in 1998 for an increased £7.74m fee.
