Hull City Record Transfers
The Tigers are not a Championship club known to spend big in transfer windows; however, brief spells in the Premier League left Hull with no choice but to dip into their funds and splash out on some higher profile signings. Hull City have only spent over £10m on two players throughout their history, and the first of these big signings came at the end of the 2014 summer transfer window.
Abel Hernandez signed from Italian club Palermo for around £10.80m, and the Uruguayan international proved to be an instant success for the Tigers, and he ended up scoring an impressive 36 goals in 99 games. Despite Hernandez’ great form, Hull City were relegated back down to the Championship, and during the 2017-18 season he ruptured his Achilles tendon before making his free move to CSKA Moscow in time for the following season.
Up until 2016, Hernandez was the clubs record signing. This was before England international Ryan Mason signed for the Tigers for a massive £13.86m in August 2016. Very unfortunately, the young English star suffered a fractured skull that required surgery after a clash of heads with Chelsea defender Gary Cahill, in a Premier League match at the start of 2017. Mason’s surgery was successful, though his rehabilitation was not enough for the midfielder to make his return to football, and subsequently he was forced to retire from professional football due to risks associated with the extent of his injury.
Hull notably signed centre-forward duo, Shane Long, and Nikica Jelavic in the summer of 2013-14, each for over £7m. Since facing relegation back down to the Championship, the Tigers have not been able to spend as much money as they had in the past decade, and their most recent signing James Scott, arrived from Motherwell FC for £1.58m making him the 46th highest transfer arrival in club history. In terms of record transfer departures, Jarrod Bowen left the Tigers before the start of the current 2019-20 season, where he joined Premier League side West Ham for over £19m. This followed former record fees received in 2017-18 for Sam Clucas as he left for Swansea, and Shane Long in 2014-15 as the Republic of Ireland international made his move to Premier League side Southampton. Clucas was sold for £14.67m, and Long for £13.41m.
Famous Hull City Transfers
Two of the most famous transfers of the modern era are defence duo, Andrew Robertson and Harry Maguire who arrived at the club during the 2014-15 summer transfer window for around £3m each. 20-year-old Robertson arrived from Dundee United and 21-year-old Maguire from Sheffield United. Just four seasons later, the pair left the Tigers for Premier League sides Liverpool (Robertson), and Leicester City (Maguire).
Since then, Robertson has gone on to win the Champions League and earn his place as the best left-back in Europe; on the other hand, Maguire made his £80m move to giants, Manchester United where he has been honoured with the captains armband.
