Bolton Wanderers Record Transfers
Bolton Wanderers are one of League One’s highest-spending clubs of all time, having spent millions of pounds especially during their 11-year spell in the Premier League between 2001-2012.
Before gaining promotion up to the top flight, Dean Holdsworth £4.4m fee was the club’s record signing, and he is still sixth on their all-time transfer arrival list. Holdsworth’s record fee was smashed almost ten years later by French star man Nicolas Anelka, who was brought in from Turkish side Fenerbache for just over £10m.
This was the first time the Trotters had spent over £10m on a player and soon after he proved his worth. Anelka played for Bolton for two seasons scoring almost one in every two games before catching the eye of Premier League rivals, Chelsea.
Anelka was sold on to Chelsea during the 2007-08 winter transfer window for a massive £16m fee – an offer which Bolton could not turn down, gaining them over £6m profit.
Just two seasons after Anelka’s arrival, Johan Elmander joined the Trotters from Ligue 1 side, Toulouse, for a new record fee of over £11m which still stands today. The former Sweden international played over 90 games for the Trotters, before joining Galatasaray for free at the end of his contract.
In 2007-08, a young English centre-back named Gary Cahill joined Bolton from Premier League rivals Aston Villa. Cahill joined for just over £5m and made a name for himself as one of England’s best young centre-backs. In 2011-12, Cahill caught the eye of giants Chelsea and joined for a profitable £7.56m fee making him the clubs second highest sale behind Anelka.
The Trotters third record sale was also to Chelsea, but much earlier than Anelka and Cahill. At the start of the new millennium, Eidur Gudjohnsen was Bolton’s record departure as he left for upwards of £6m. The Icelandic legend soon made it to the big stage, playing for Barcelona after his Chelsea career.
Famous Bolton Wanderers Transfers
One of Bolton’s most famous transfers was the arrival of Republic of Ireland legend Jason McAteer who arrived at his first professional club as a youth player in 1992. McAteer went on to play over 100 games for the Trotters before securing a club-record move to Liverpool in 1995-06.
The young midfielder joined the Reds for over £5.5m, and his fee still stands as the clubs sixth all-time sale in history. You do not want to miss out on the latest Bolton Wanderers transfer rumours from League One.
