Wycombe Wanderers Record Transfers
Chairboys have had their fair share of ups and downs in recent years and the same could be said for their ventures in the transfer market since they haven’t really been splashing the cash at all. That much becomes clearer once we see that the player who arrived at the club back in 2001/02 still tops the charts as their most expensive signing ever.
That campaign, Wycombe Wanderers forked out £270,000 to lure Darren Currie away from Barnet FC with the player surpassing the previous record-holder in the process as well. Before he arrived onto the scene, the club’s most expensive acquisition was that of Steve McGavin from 1994/95 and he moved away from Birmingham City for a reported sum of £176,000.
The season after that, they also purchased John Williams from Coventry City for £162,000 and these three deals are still the biggest three transfers in their history. That reveals that they are indeed not among the biggest spenders out there.
Even though their departures are slightly more lucrative, none actually eclipse the one-million pound mark and the situation is quite similar to the arrivals. Nathan Tyson went to Nottingham Forest in 2005/06 for £900,000 and his departure is still the biggest piece of business the Chairboys have ever conducted, and that’s when considering both incoming and outgoing deals.
Tyson is then followed by Jordon Ibe’s exit to Liverpool for a reported fee of £540,000 and Matt Ingram’s departure for Queens Park Rangers for £477,000, the former in 2011/12 and the latter in 2015/16.
Famous Wycombe Wanderers Transfers
Even though they were never famous for bringing in superstar signings, both Currie and Tyson deserve a shout on this list, the former for his record-breaking arrival and the latter for his record-breaking exit from the club.
Neither, however, can truly be categorised as the most famous nor the most iconic one, regardless of the price tags over their heads. Interestingly enough, the players who ended up having the biggest of roles at the club were not brought in for historic sums nor were they as exciting back then when they first arrived at Wycombe Wanderers.
Players such as Keith Ryan or Dave Carroll – icons of the club and fan-favourites who would rise in popularity and status during their stints with the Chairboys, are some of those names. Keith Scott is also someone who should be put on that very same list and his incredible performances earned him a move to the Premier League as well.
Steve Brown is another star who ended up serving the badge for more than a decade and Simon Garner, whose stint was shorter but also quite effective, gets in there with a shout as well.
