MK Dons Record Transfers
Milton Keynes Dons, formerly known as Wimbledon FC, were one of the highest spending clubs during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Dons have spent over £1m on 12 players in their history and they have even spent over £10m on a player.
In January of 1999, John Hartson arrived from Premier League side West Ham for a massive £10.13m fee, breaking Ben Thatcher’s previous £2.37m record fee set in 1996-97 when he arrived from Millwall. The Welsh international arrived in the winter transfer window, and his time with the Dons was damaged by injury.
Despite this, the centre-forward still managed to score a notable 19 goals in just 42 games for the Dons, first in the Premier League and then during their campaign back in the First Division following their relegation in 2000. Hartson ended up leaving the Dons during the 2000-01 season, moving to Coventry City on a pay-for-play deal.
Midfield duo Martin Andresen and Gareth Ainsworth joined the Dons for £2.70m each in 1999, making them the joint third record signings in club history.
In terms of sales, the Dons famously sold Guyana international to Premier League Newcastle United for almost £10m at the start of the millennium, and this record is yet to be broken. During the same season, left-back Ben Thatcher left the Dons to join Tottenham Hotspur for a respectable £6.8m fee, whereas striker Jason Euell departed for a similar fee to Charlton the following season.
Experienced Premier League centre-back Hermann Hreidarsson made his move to Ipswich Town during their second spell in the top flight, and the Icelandic international departed for a large £6m sum.
Defensive midfielder and Welsh international Vinnie Jones had two spells playing for the Dons. His first spell was in 1986 when he joined from IFK Holmsund for just £10Th before being sold for a much-increased £700k three seasons later. Dennis Wise famously arrived from Southampton in 1985 on a free transfer, and was sold to Chelsea for £2.16m after five seasons for the Dons.
